Class A vs. Class B: A Plain English Guide to Cloud Pricing
Ever wondered why your cloud storage bill is so unpredictable? The secret lies in two little terms: "Class A" and "Class B" operations. Understanding them is the key to saving money.
What Are These "Classes"?
Cloud storage providers like Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage don't just charge you for the amount of data you store. They also charge you for how often you *access* that data. They split these actions into two main categories:
- Class A Operations (The Expensive Ones): Think of these as actions that change or list things. This includes uploading a new file, creating a folder, or listing the contents of a folder. These are more "intense" operations, so providers charge more for them.
- Class B Operations (The Cheaper Ones): This is primarily for actions that retrieve or read data, like downloading a file or viewing a photo preview.
The Hidden Cost of "Free" Tiers
Many providers offer a "free tier" that gives you a certain amount of storage. But the catch is often in the operation costs. You might have free storage, but you'll get a surprise bill because you listed your files too many times (Class A) or downloaded them frequently (Class B).
How Cloud Z (and Cloudflare R2) is Different
This is why we built Cloud Z on Cloudflare R2. R2 has a fundamentally different pricing model that is much more user-friendly.
Most importantly, R2 has zero egress fees. Egress fees are what traditional providers charge you every time you download your own data. It's like paying a fee to take your own books out of a library you're already paying for. R2 gets rid of that completely.
Furthermore, R2 has a generous free tier for operations and is architected to be significantly cheaper for both Class A and Class B operations than its competitors. By choosing a provider that minimizes these access costs, we can pass those savings directly on to you, offering a more predictable and affordable service.
So when you use Cloud Z, you're not just getting secure storage; you're getting smarter storage that's designed to be affordable in the long run.
